Balu Mahendran- The connection between art and commercial cinema?

When going through a list of inevitable filmmakers, Balu Mahendra tops the list.

          What's so special about him?

           Kamal Hassan says,

Balu Mahendra is the only director who is capable to balance art and

            commercial cinema.

Recently, I saw Moondram Pirai, which starrs Kamal Hassan and Late Sridevi in the lead roles.

Sridevi is introduced as a carefree and modern girl , but unfortunate incidents transforms her

and takes her to another city.

After meeting an  accident, she is pushed to amnesia and thereby prostitution.

Thanks to the cult nature of  friend of Kamal Hassan, he and his friend go to the prostitution

centre. Consequently, Kamal Hassan meets 7 yr old Sridevi, and excavates her as he does in his

movie "Mahanadhi" where he retrieves his daughter.

The 7 yr old Sridevi has a good time with Kamal Hassan, they play like children as if to

question whether they were friends from childhood.

The plot's climax and probably the loyalty of Sridevi is come to test, when an old woman urges

Kamal Hassan to consult her to  a  nearby Ayurveda doctor, and at the same time, her parents are

informed that she is spotted in Ooty. The scenes cuts simentaneously to Sridevi 's treatment.

treatment and her parent's arrival to the city.

Sridevi is cured, and there is limited time for happy Kamal and the chase starts towards Sridevi

who is arriving towards the railway station.

When comparing to Tamil cinema's climax template of Railway station of Madhavan's film in

2000's , this film has betrayal attack to the innocent Kamal hassan and a harsh reaction from

             our   audience.

In the film titled "Run", where Vivek holds a vessel claming his identity and familiarity to

Madhavan. This scene is inspired from Moondram Pirai.

             That's it all for today.
